The Shake: Mar. 20, 2022
A publication on Handshake and the DWeb.
Top 10 Highlights from HandyCon
1. The Handshake Tarot project of 22 unique ASCII-art tarot cards has been released for auction. The descending price auction amounts can be found on ShakeDex and auctions can be executed directly through thehandshaketarot/ site — the beauty of atomic swaps on Handshake.
2. HIP-R A recursive resolver from Luke Burns for HIP-5 protocols. Luke demoed various HIP-5 protocols and middleware for dynamic zone storage and trustless SLDs including hip-r aliasing, hip-r hyperzones, and hip-r ipfs.
3. XNHNS Kiba Gateaux spoke on the cross-network Handshake protocol for bridging domains to other networks, starting with Polygon. XNHNS is a HIP-5 compliant tool to manage all DNS records (including SLDs) on chain with full programmability. Coming soon is a UI to easily deploy your own SLD registrars. Build-your-own-ENS anyone?
4. Founders, Andrew Lee and JJ spoke. JJ touched on lcdb and mako, the LevelDB database and related client in C, he’s building for Handshake’s second full node implementation. JJ — only half jokingly — remarked that the stated goal of maximum portability should allow the future HNS full node to run on Windows 95….
5. HNS Chat Eskimo released a HNSchat bot tool this week, prior to demoing the encrypted messaging platform for Handshake names. Example: typing !hns
in a channel which you and the bot are in will make the bot reply with the current HNS price.
6. HNS Search Andreas Renz shared some of the vision and roadmap for the open source search engine project. LINDA, the indexer, is continuing to learn how to categorize content with the help of machine learning. The crawler will enable sites not yet indexed to be crawled on the spot and synced for everyone else. Various layers of the search stack will be released this year, culminating in a HNS Search app.
7. Skynet Kernel David Vorick spoke on the new release of the Skynet Kernel. It makes possible running an entire Handshake full node in your browser using kernel modules. These modules can be used to decentralize apps — they can intercept APIs and, for example, replace an SPV resolver with a full node.
8. Namebase Johnny Wu of Namebase and Hillan Klein of Namecheap spoke on the post-acquisition roadmap. An integration with Bob Wallet in the form of a ‘decentralize assets’ button is a welcome push for self-custody from the largest custodian in the ecosystem. Additionally, expect Handshake TLDs to be able to list on Namecheap with all the same tools ICANN TLDs are provided.
9. 4.7M HNS Sale of .S The third day of HandyCon kicked off with the largest TLD sale in Handshake’s history: 4.7M HNS (~$750k) for the single letter TLD .s . It appears the winner of the auction may be Namecheap CEO, Richard Kirkendall.
10. Hackathon The Handshake hackathon continues through this week. Stay tuned for projects built on Handshake, Skynet’s Homescreen, and Akash.
P.S. Full video coverage of HandyCon will be released in the coming weeks!
