The Shake: Dec. 5, 2021
A weekly recap on Handshake and the Decentralized Web
Handshake registries are coming
Neuenet is a Handshake registry launching soon, by @NetOpWibby. Neuenet has amassed a portfolio of hundreds of top level domains, which domain name registration will be available beneath. Along with the announcement of Agaamin (an Indian HNS registry in Devanagari Script on the TLD .भ), new Handshake registries are coming.
Handshake opens the internet’s namespace and, in doing so, removes the line between TLD owners and registries. Anyone can own their own TLD and any TLD can be their own registry. The latter, while technically true, will become more practical with time. Neuenet has plans to eventually open source themselves and share registry resources with others, too. “It makes sense for businesses to be secretive but that doesn’t make sense for Handshake. Every portfolio can be their own ICANN (but better),” explains Neuenet.
While some TLDs will be kept for personal use and others for new naming use cases, we can expect an explosion of registries as many TLD owners opt for selling public domain names. This tends to happen once you remove the barriers to a free market. Not only will domain name markets competition heat up based on the sheer volume of TLDs, but on the quality of those names. Yes, ICANN, not all names are created equal. Some names — Handshake names — can resolve without centralized certificate authorities, can be self custodied, exchanged permissionlessly, and verified trustlessly in a public ledger. It’s safe to say, Handshake registries are a trend to follow as we enter 2022.
Ok, now to our weekly recap.
